Australia launches new online database to help Indian students

Australia's Acting High Commissioner Bernard Philip has launched an online database to help Indian students find Australian university courses.

The database will also help the Australian students looking for study opportunities in India.

The database is an initiative of the Australia-India Education Council. It was funded by the Indian University Grants Commission (UGC) and implemented by Jamia Milia Islamia University (JMI).

"This website will be an excellent resource for Indian students seeking to complete part of their degree in Australia, and for Australian students wishing to study in India," said Philip.

"The database can be searched by location, institution or course, which will help students from both countries to find the information they need. I would like to thank UGC and JMI for their leadership in this initiative, which will further reinforce the strong education links between Australia and India," he added.

The database can be accessed at http://www.australiaindiacredittransfer.org/.

The website is being launched just before Australian students begin to travel to India under the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP) in 2015. (ANI)

A case in point Learning through case studies gives an idea about ‘how to do it?’ when in similar situation. Prachi Rege gathers expert reaction on using this ‘powerful’ teaching tool in the curriculum

It is said that ‘Experience is the best teacher’. However, this experience doesn’t necessarily have to be undergone personally, but can be learnt through others as well. In a classroom, while textbooks and reference material serves the purpose of teaching concepts, definition and methods, case study trains you with the skill required to do the job. As a result, most higher education institutes swear by using this technique. Essentially, a case study is an analysis of an organisation, an event, a person, or a series of decisions resulting in a success or failure. If used correctly, it can be a very powerful teaching tool. “I believe students benefit immensely from working through case studies if they use the “experience” and apply the lessons learnt,” says Chris Kinsville-Heyne, professor of leadership and strategy, Hult International Business School. 

Professors at Hult are very fortunate in this respect as many of them are adjunct professors, who run their own consultancies or businesses on a day-to-day basis, and are able to bring current working practices into the lecture room. “For my courses, International Negotiations, and Crisis Communications and Management, I like to use case studies to highlight certain points and practices. This can be to reinforce a particular strategy or possibly to expose weaknesses in a code of practice,” adds Kinsville-Heyne. Many students are inductive learners who learn better from examples than from logical development. So it becomes a very effective classroom technique. A major advantage of teaching with case studies is that the students are actively engaged in identifying the principles and theories by abstracting them from the examples. 

Speaking on the importance of using this method in class room, Rangana Maitra, convenor, International Case Study Conference, 2015, says, “Class becomes interactive while faculty member plays the role of a facilitator. They become aware of real life challenges and incidents experienced by people working in corporate world. Case studies help students to explore how what they have learned applies to real world situations.” 

Keeping this in mind, IES Management College and Research Centre, Mumbai is also organising a Two-day International Case Study Conference in February 2015. It intends to provide a platform for case writers, academicians and industry experts to present case studies in the area of business and management. The aim is to highlight real life challenges and incidents experienced by people working in the corporate world. 

At IES, classroom learning is enriched through case studies of Harvard Business School, Richard IVY Business School and ICFAI Business School. Hult on the other hand looks at current events or practices for analysis, which, personally, could be anything. Kinsville-Heyne’s favourite case study is the first two hours and 36 mins of the London Bombings, and the communication that took place during that time. “It has everything I require in order to explain the confusion that dominates everything during the early stages of a crisis; lack of clarity, contradictory messages, several agencies wanting to say something, social media, human reactions, everything,” he states. 

As education institutes give a thumbs up to case study learning method, how do the corporate view this phenomenon? Shalini Pillay, head, people, performance and culture, KPMG, India, opines, “Case studies allow students to think about the application of theoretical concepts in actual business scenarios. Dealing with business scenarios helps them bridge the gap between theory and reality. This is a critical aspect of the way we work in consulting.”

In today’s dynamic business environment, employees are expected to not only be the subject matter experts but also have the experience and skills to translate that expertise into a solution, which will work for the client. “A case study based curriculum is known to work for the development of key skills such as problem solving, decision making, analytical abilities – quantitative and/ or qualitative, coping with ambiguities, individual study, time management, presentation skills , group working and communication,” says Pillay. 

KPMG is putting together a competition called the KPMG International Case Competition (KICC). “It is a competition which brings this form of learning to the B-school student community in the form of an exciting and rewarding global challenge. The students who make an impact during the competition have the opportunity to become a part of KPMG,” explains Pillay. Another corporate showing interest in case studies is Cairn India, one of the largest oil and gas exploration and production companies in the country. As a part of the preliminary round of their competition ‘Amazing Champions of Energy (ACE)’, a case study competition on the theme ‘Oil and Gas policy Framework in India’ was conducted at National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE). 

The most impactful aspect of case study based learning is that it enables the person to not only apply his knowledge and experience, but also conduct research and analyse the problem, before arriving at a recommendation. “As long as the recommendations are realistic and are supported with logic and analysis, there are no right or wrong answers,” signs off Pillay.

Want a job? Why not shoot a ‘selfie video’ resume?

Employers will judge candidates’ skills through 2-minute videos
Mumbai, December 22:   

It’s just not actors who have to be comfortable in front of the camera these days.

Employers across industries — such as hotels, travel agencies, marketing firms and modelling agencies among others — have begun seeking ‘selfie resumes’, pushing many job-seekers to shoot videos to market their talents.

Take the case of Vaishali Sharma, a self-confessed social media addict, for instance. She used her iPhone 6 to shoot a ‘selfie video’ that will serve as her ‘job application’. It took several takes before Sharma, who is doing her bachelor’s in hotel management, was satisfied with the two-minute clip.

“This is still at a nascent stage, and now with everyone having a smartphone this will soon become the norm,” said Divyangana Srivastava, director of Human Resources at JW Marriott Mumbai.

“This helps us gauge the presentability, communications skills and the candidate’s fluency in the (English) language.”
JW Marriott, which recruits about 70-80 people every year, now encourages applicants for front office or marketing positions to send in a video about themselves.

Digital marketing firm MindShift Interactive is another company using these videos for recruitments. “We are now asking for self-shot videos from candidates along with their resumes. This has to be sent via WhatsApp or e-mail,” said Zafar Rais, Chief Executive Officer of MindShift, adding that this is a natural progression of technology.

In the two-minute video, candidates have to speak on why they like digital marketing, why are they the best suited for the job and a story narrating a digital marketing initiative they have done.

About 40 per cent of the selfie resumes the company gets are through WhatsApp, he added.

Many firms want the applicants to include details of previous jobs, why are they applying for the post, why they left their previous role and expected salary, among other things. Marketing and sales consulting firm ZS Associates, which employs about 2,300 people and recruits 800 people every year, is another firm looking at this technology.

“From early next year, we will ask for selfie videos (as covering letters)…. Generally, applicants copy and paste covering letters from the web, defeating the whole purpose,” said Chaitrali Singh, Director-HR, ZS Associates.
However, not all are convinced.

“In our experience any form of video resume, such as selfie resume, has limited utility as the rehearsed talk doesn’t give a clear picture of candidates’ skills,” said Sanjoe Jose, Co-Founder and CEO of Talview.com, a video interview platform.

IIT-Madras launches incubation cell for startups in Biotech

CHENNAI: The research work of G Purushothaman and Kiran Kumar, who were working on technology to change the way doctors test patients for infectious diseases, was promising. But two years after four young researchers started to develop point-of-care testing devices — that would allow a single check for multiple infectious diseases like TB, HIV and Hepatitis B — the team shrunk to two. 

For researchers working on projects with potential but lacking the resources to see them through, like Purushothaman and Kumar's Purius Nanosystems, the IIT-M Incubation Cell is a godsend. IIT-Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi inaugurated a biotechnology incubator on Thursday that will support four projects of doctoral students from the institution's biotechnology department. 

The initiative, supported by the Government of India's Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, aims to help startups and small and medium enterprises develop products and make them commercially successful.

Food and Human Waste Fuel Bio Bus

With the world adopting measures for sustainable living, fuel for transport is one area in which a lot of research is happening. To this end, a bio-waste fuelled 40-seater bus went on its maiden journey on November 30 between Bristol and Bath in the UK. The bus runs on biomethane gas, produced from food and sewage waste, and with a full tank this bus can travel up to 300km. The biomethane for the bus is produced at Bristol Sewage Treatment Works, which is a company under GENeco, a subsidiary of Wessex Water, a water supply and sewerage utility company in UK.
“Through treating sewage and food that’s unfit for human consumption, we’re able to produce enough biomethane to provide a significant supply of gas to the national gas network that’s capable of powering almost 8,500 homes as well as fuelling the Bio-Bus,” says Mohammed Saddiq, GENeco General Manager, in a report on www.wessexwater.co.uk.
The Bristol Sewage treatment plant works on over 75 million cubic metres of sewage waste and 35,000 tonnes of food waste every year. Over 17 million cubic metres of biomethane gas is being produced at Bristol in a year through a process called anaerobic digestion. This is a process where microorganisms like bacteria break down biodegradable materials into methane and carbon dioxide during the absence of oxygen. Biogas is one such gas produced through this process.
The bus will run for another three weeks and over 10,000 passengers are expected to travel in the coming weeks. “The bus also clearly shows that human excreta and wasted food are valuable resources,” says Charlotte Morton, chief executive of Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association, in the report on the Wessex Water website.
But this sustainable form of public transport is not something new as the Scotland-based company Stagecoach, came out with a bio-fuelled bus in 2007. It claimed to be the first such project in the UK and won Travel and Transport Award at the 2010 Green Business Award. Their Bio-Bus runs on cooking oil and other food industry by-products. The cooking oil and products were recycled at East Ayrshire Council’s recycling plant in Scotland. They have now invested over Euro 1.1million (approx over `8 crore) in upgrading their bio buses and hope to prevent 150,000 tonnes of Carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere through lesser fuel emissions in the coming year.

Challenge Yourself

It is important to learn the logic behind a problem rather than just imitating the steps and 'managing' it.

I’m sure some of you have enjoyed the challenge posed by a difficult puzzle or a particularly difficult climb, or playing an opponent who is just a little better than you. In each of these cases you are pushed to discover a new limit that you hadn’t known, a new level of capability that surprises you. You come out of such experiences tired but glowing, perhaps physically (and mentally) exhausted but with the sense that you’ve just refilled your reservoir of energy.
Now think about the last time you really grappled with a mental challenge. I’m not talking about memorising long paragraphs for a history examination or repeated solving of math problems so that you know the process by heart. I’m talking about getting inside that concept or process in a way that you understand it, so that the knowledge comes from struggling with the problem rather than simply learning how to imitate the steps.
You’ll probably find that even without realising it, we are mostly following the second way of doing things. We’re content to accept a logic that someone gives us and imitate a process rather than getting behind it to understand the logic.

‘Managing’ learning

This method of “getting educated” has been drilled into us, right from when we are told to go by the book with our answers or repeat a poem with a certain cadence or strictly follow a laboratory procedure without being told (and warned not to ask) why.
As a result, we forget that learning by ourselves and in itself can be personally rewarding. Unfortunately, we also find that we can get where we want (and what we want) by “managing” formal education. All it requires is for us to learn the tricks of presenting information in a way that mimics understanding. We look at previous projects to model ours on; we press our teachers to give us “study guides” that can take us carefully through the forest of ideas and facts in a way that we can map the examination perfectly.
So we come out of degree colleges and even research programmes with high grades that actually have nothing to do with our grasp of the field we have supposedly “mastered.” Teachers and so-called mentors are entirely complicit in this process. We’ve effectively encouraged mediocrity in the system by showing that “managing” it gives results that are good enough. After all, we don’t fail anyone or even give bad grades to papers that only show faithful “reproduction” rather than any evidence of understanding the underlying concepts. Of course, it is sometimes difficult to tell the difference, and so we end up not bothering, most of the time.

Work hard

What has ended up happening is that we never learn what it means to work hard to understand. We study just enough to pass a test, to score decently or enough to take us to the next level; our eye and mind constantly on where it will get us rather than what we are learning. We forget that real learning comes with the struggle to understand, to make the problem ours in a way that the solution is also ours, to try to work it out so that we really get it for ourselves. Games that are too easy bore us after a while, so why is it that we are constantly looking for easy ways out in our education? There is a joy in getting something right after trying hard, just as coming out of a strenuous workout in the gym can be both exhausting and exhilarating. That’s the kind of challenge mountain climbers love, and researchers look forward to. It’s also true that if it is too hard, we get turned off after a point, or we ask for help — and the latter option is always possible in an educational scenario. Of course, all learning cannot be fun or even intellectually exhilarating. Some things are just plain tedious, and there’s no getting away from the repetition that is needed to internalise important facts or learn formulae and procedures by heart so that we can efficiently apply them. But if we’ve worked through the logic that lies behind these procedures, we will most likely be able to apply them not only efficiently, but also creatively.

The IELTS 1,001 ways app makes it easier for students to learn English and helps them express themselves better.

As students are increasingly looking for opportunities to study abroad, clearing the English language test, is a challenge they are constantly grappling with.
IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is offered in more than 1,000 locations around the world and over 2.2 million students take this test each year. The test comprises four sections — listening, reading, writing and speaking.
British Council has been instrumental in helping students prepare for this test. It provides expert support to students in the form of videos, books and online interactive courses.
“IELTS is a gateway of opportunities for people. There’s a great variety of accents and ways in which English is spoken around the world, and we want to celebrate this diversity,” says Stephen Carey, IELTS Global Marketing Manager of British Council.

Many ways

“We believe that there are about 1,001 different ways of speaking English. Some students find this language a challenge and are nervous while conversing. Therefore, the British Counsel has come up with a mobile app, IELTS 1001 ways, to help students get over their inhibition and start speaking in English,” says Mr. Carey. 1001 ways is a fun and educative mobile app that allows students to learn English accents from all over the world. Currently available only on android, it allows users to watch a video of a person speaking and guess where the person is from. Users can also record a 5-second video of them saying — there are 1001 ways to speak English. The video is then added to the game, and others playing the game can guess where the user is from.
“One feature of the IELTS test is that people get to express themselves in the ‘Face-to-Face’ speaking section. We hope that this app helps students in this regard,” says Mr.Carey.

A joint collaboration between A*STAR, the National University of Singapore and the Nanyang Technological University, the Singapore International Graduate Award welcomes all international students to pursue a Ph.D. in Singapore.
Eligibility: Students with a passion for S&E research, excellent academic qualifications, good reports from academic referees and fluency in English can apply for this award.

இந்திய ஆயுள் காப்பீட்டுத் துறையில் 50 ஆண்டுகளைக் கடந்த மிகவும் வெற்றிகரமாக இயங்கி வரும் லைப் இன்ஸ்யூரன்ஸ் கார்ப்பரேஷன் ஆப் இந்தியா எல்.ஐ.சி பற்றி நாம் அறிவோம்.

நியூசிலாந்தில் உள்ள வைகாட்டோ பல்கலைக்கழகம் உயர்கல்வி பயிலும் மாணவர்களுக்கு உதவித்தொகை வழங்க உள்ளது.
வைகாட்டோ பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் உயர்கல்வி பயில விரும்பும் மாணவர்களுக்கு இந்த உதவித்தொகை வழங்கப்படுகிறது.
