ATHARVA One fine sunny day, back in the year 1988, began the fascinating and vibrant journey, which has stood the test of time and gone on to become bigger and better with every passing year. True to our scenic locale, we called it the ‘Hill Fest’ back then, when this journey began more as an intra-college event, in order to encourage maximum student participation and help them showcase their array of talents and competitive spirit. As years went by, in the year 1996, Hill Fest was renamed as ‘Summit’, and transformed for the first time into an inter-B school fest, which attracted the brightest of minds from across the nation. However, the radical change came through in the year 2002, when Summit was metamorphosed to its current majestic avatar – ATHARVA!

Engineering Studies Abroad

Several reasons lie behind on student’s interest to pursue engineering courses in abroad. Generally, western countries provide the latest technologies and wide range facilities in their education system. In recent years, Asian countries like Singapore and Hong Kong have attained fame for their engineering education as they provide ample industrial exposure, international approach and good employment opportunities.
Multinational companies have started to recognise the importance of international education. Inability to obtain seats in premier engineering colleges in India is also the reason for students desire to study abroad.
A student naturally would get confused in selecting particular institution, as, numerous educational institutions are available in foreign developed nations. Several overseas institutions have educational collaborations among themselves. Before taking decision to study abroad, students need to consider so many aspects like long term plans, employment opportunities, medium of instruction, facilities available and above all the expenses to be incurred for the entire period of study and stay.  
Admission procedures
Despite having few common regulations in admission process for overseas students, every foreign institution has its own system too.
Some details of general admission procedures followed by certain institutions are provided below:
* It is a must complete appropriate school education, which is recognised by the country, where, one plans to pursue his/ her higher studies.  Generally, across the globe, CBSE or IB methods of school education are highly accepted. While applying, if you happen to possess certificates related to extra curricular activities, along with your academic records, it would get bonus points in admission.
* English proficiency is very essential, when you plan to study countries like US, Canada, Australia, Britain and Newzealand. So, you must secure good scores in English tests like TOEFL and IELTS.
* If you would like to pursue engineering studies, mathematics should be a mandatory subject in your school studies. But some foreign institutions, which are offering engineering courses, require physics and chemistry along with mathematics. Students of commerce background from India are allowed to pursue computer science course at UG level in USA.
* Most foreign institutions seek SAT1 and SAT2 qualifications from overseas students and especially American universities make this eligibility as mandatory.
* Students, who wish to pursue higher education in foreign universities, must do well in their extra curricular activities too. As, many overseas institutions consider these certificates for admission procedures.
* Some countries have fixed 18 as the minimum age limit for admitting foreign students in UG degrees. 
Getting ready for admission
If you want to pursue overseas higher education, you need to start selecting the course and institution while you are studying 10th standard and have to apply before the results of 12th standard. In that context, 11th standard marks will get importance. So, avoid neglecting your studies in 11th standard.
Do remember some important points while selecting foreign universities
* Consider the importance between the choosing subject and your future prospects.
* Recognition of particular institute, which you chose.
* Total expenses
* Duration of study
* Employment opportunities after study.
However, nowadays, all admission procedures have come under online method. As a result, it has become lot more easier. Almost all foreign universities generally seek academic documents, other related documents, recommendation letters, personal statements and financial proofs from students.
Before applying to any overseas institution, you must thoroughly go through the official website of that institution and have discussion with persons, who have experience regarding overseas education.
Let us analyse the admission procedures for engineering studies from some prominent countries.
United States of America
In this country, every educational institution has its own method of admission procedures. Before applying, you must check details regarding recognition of the institution. The organisation called ABET(Accreditation board for engineering and technology) approves the engineering studies in US and provides recognition. But these approval and recognition are only for courses and not for the institution. In the same institution, some courses might have got recognition and some courses might not have got recognition.
Most of the bachelors degrees in US are of 4 years duration, but some institutions offer 5 years integrated courses too. Research facilities and trainings are provided during UG courses itself. In selecting engineering courses in USA there are lot of options. Considerable marks from SAT1 and SAT2 exams are important to get desirable engineering course without much competition. Bachelor’s degree gets its value only from performance and marks and not from duration.
Fee structure differs from one university to the other. Generally, it would cost from 20,000USD to 45,000USD per year in USA. It is also possible to get scholarships and fellowships. But, to get these grants, one should submit his/her familys income proof. It is important to keep it in mind that seeking financial assistance from the institution would reduce your chances of getting an admission.
A student can remain in US up to 29 months after completing bachelor degree in engineering for getting necessary trainings.
Australia
For the past 20 years, Australian education has attracted Indian students although some problems crept up in the recent years. Excellent research facilities and international recognition of its degrees pushes foreign students towards Australian universities. To join bachelor’s degree in Australia, one should have Australian senior secondary certificate of education, which comprises of 12 years of schooling or internationally recognised education certificate such as Indian class 12 certificate.
Students are expected to get atleast 60% of marks in 12th and need to have good scores in IELTS exams. But this IELTS exam should have been written within 24 months before the day on which the application is being made. Scores of 6 and above would do good to get into any recognised institutions.
Good number of Australian universities are recognising TOEFL marks. Engineering aspirants need to pursue mathematics as a subject in their school secondary and senior secondary levels.
Australian engineering degrees are of 3 years duration. An overseas student needs to spend from A$9,000 to A$14,000 per year. Scholarship facility is also available. As a foreign student, one should pay his/her tuition fees before the courses commence.

பொறியியல் பட்டப் படிப்பில் மெக்கானிக் கல், ஆர்க்கிடெக் பாடப் பிரிவுகள் பெண்களுக்கு அதிக வேலைவாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றுத் தருகின்றன. மெக்கானிக்கலில் ஆட்டோ மொபைல், மேனுபேக்சரிங் பாடப் பிரிவுகள் பெண்களுக்கு பொருத்தமானது. தற்போது மெக்கானிக்கல் துறையில் 8 % பெண்கள் மட்டுமே பணியாற்றுகிறார்கள். மெக்கானிக்கல் பொறியியல் சார்ந்த நிறுவனங்களில் ஆண், பெண் சரிவிகித அடிப்படையில் பணி வாய்ப்பு வழங்கப்பட்டிருந்தால் மட்டுமே மத்திய அரசு, உலக வங்கி மற்றும் இன்டர்நேஷனல் மானிட்டரி ஃபண்டு ஆகியவை, திட்டத்துக்கான நிதியை ஒதுக்கீடு செய்கின்றன. எனவே, மெக்கானிக்கல் முடித்த பெண்களை நிறுவனங்கள் ரத்தினக் கம்பளம் விரித்து வரவேற்கின்றன.
இதிலும் பட்டப் படிப்புடன் நிறுத்தாமல் புராடக்ட் டிசைனிங், ஆட்டோமேட்டிவ் டிசைனிங், வெல்டிங் இன்ஜினியரிங், பைப்பிங் இன்ஜினியரிங், எனர்ஜி இன்ஜினியரிங், தெர்மல் இன்ஜினியரிங் உள்ளிட்ட உயர் படிப்புகளை படிப்பது எதிர்காலத்தை வளமாக்கும்.
கற்பனை வளம் மிக்கவர்களுக்கு ஆர்க்கிடெக்சர் ஏற்றது. சுய வேலைவாய்ப்புக்கும் கைகொடுக்கும். ஐந்தாண்டு படிப்பான இதைப் படிக்க விரும்புவோர் முன்னதாக National aptitude test for architecture நுழைவுத் தேர்வு எழுத வேண்டும். அதில் 200-க்கு குறைந்தது 80 மதிப்பெண் பெற வேண்டும். ஏப்ரல், மே, ஜூன் மாதங்களில் ஆன்-லைன் தேர்வு நடக்கும். ஒருவர் எத்தனை முறை வேண்டுமானாலும் இத்தேர்வை எழுதலாம்.
ஆனால், இதில் ஏற்கனவே எடுத்த மதிப்பெண் மற்றும் தற்போது எடுத்த மதிப்பெண்ணின் கூட்டு சராசரியை மதிப்பெண்ணாக வழங்குவர். உதாரணத்துக்கு முதலில் எழுதி 70 மதிப்பெண் பெற்று, அடுத்தத் தேர்வில் 80 மதிப்பெண் பெற்றால் கூட்டு சராசரி மதிப்பெண்ணாக 75 வழங்கப்படும். இப்பாடப் பிரிவுக்கு தமிழகத்தில் தனி கவுன்சலிங்தான். தனியாக விண்ணப்பிக்க வேண்டும். மற்ற பொறியியல் பாடப் பிரிவுக்களுக்கான கவுன்சலிங்கில் இது இடம் பெறாது.
இதற்கான கட் ஆஃப் 400. ஆர்க்கிடெக்சர் பாடப் பிரிவுக்கான பாடத்தில் 200 மதிப்பெண்களும், நுழைவுத் தேர்வில் 200 மதிப்பெண்களும் கொண்டு தரவரிசைப் பட்டியல் தயாரித்து, சேர்க்கை நடத்தப்படும். சிவில் இன்ஜினியரிங் படித்தவர்கள், மாஸ்டர் ஆஃப் ஆர்க்கிடெக்சர், மாஸ்டர் ஆஃப் டவுன் பிளானிங், இன்டீரியர் டிசைன், லேண்ட் ஸ்கேப்பிங் உள்ளிட்ட மேற்படிப்புகளை படிக்கலாம். ஐ.ஏ.எஸ்., ஐ.பி.எஸ்., போலவே ஐ.இ.எஸ். (Indian Engineering service) தேர்வும் உண்டு. அதை எழுதி அரசாங்கத்தில் உயர் பதவியும் பெறலாம்.

புதிய நோய்களைக் கண்டறிய நுண்ணிய கருவிகளும், உபகரணங்களும் மருத்துவத் துறையில் அதிகளவு பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. இதனால், மருத்துவத் துறையில் பயோ-மெடிக்கல் இன்ஜினியரிங் படிப்பவர்களுக்கு கூடுதல் வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது.
இதில் பட்டமேற்படிப்பு படிக்க விரும்புபவர்கள் மெடிக்கல் எலக்ட்ரானிக்கல்ஸ், இன்ஸ்ட்ருமென்ட் அண்டு கன்ட்ரோல் டெக்னாலஜி படிப்புகளை எடுத்துப் படிப்பதன் மூலம் மருத்துவத் துறையில் முன்னணி இடத்தைப் பிடிக்க முடியும். மேலும் பயோ-மெடிக்கல் முடித்தவர்களுடன் இணைந்து ஸ்கேன் சென்டர், பரிசோதனைக் கூடங்கள் அமைத்து சுய வேலைவாய்ப்பும் பெறலாம்.

The GATE Advantage

Apart from reflecting the relative performance level of a candidate, GATE scores serve as a value-add.

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination being conducted and administered by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology. It is conducted by the National Coordination Board GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
In the present competitive scenario, where there is mushrooming of universities and engineering colleges, the only yardstick to measure and test the caliber of engineering students is the GATE. There is a misconception among students that GATE exam is meant for ME./M.Tech which finally leads to a teaching career only.
The GATE advantage
In this context, the following points are worth noting about this examination:
Many public sector undertakings such as BHEL, Indian Oil Corporation, NTPC, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (there are PSUs totalling 217 in number) are using the GATE score for selecting candidates for their organisations. Students who qualify in GATE are entitled to a stipend of Rs 8,000 per month during their M.Tech course. Better remuneration is being offered for students of M.Tech/M.E as compared to those pursuing B.Tech /B.E. A good GATE rank assures a good job. After joining M.Tech. at IITs and IISc, one can look at a salary package ranging from Rs 7 lakh to 30 lakh per annum, depending upon specialisation and performance.
Clearing GATE is also an eligibility clause for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories. M.Tech. degree is mandatory for those wishing to apply for research positions in R&D centres. The GATE score is valid for two years and those who qualify this test are eligible for doing Master’s degree at NUS, (National University of Singapore), Singapore. A GATE score definitely gives one an edge when it comes to joining reputed companies as well as off-campus recruitments. For those who couldn’t pursue their BTech in IIT, it provides another opportunity to study in the prestigious IITs. Above all, it certainly gives you a huge technical edge over others in all your interviews and career planning.
Raising numbers
In the recent years the trend is very significant. From 1.66 lakh aspirants in 2008, the number of aspirants touched 5.5 lakh in 2011 and is expected to touch eight lakh in 2013. It is one of the toughest examinations in our country where competition is very high and requires focused study in a planned manner.
It aims at rigorous testing of the students’ capability in engineering concepts along with managerial skills. Engineering subjects cover 70 per cent weightage while General aptitude and Engineering Mathematics cover 15 per cent respectively.
The three-hour GATE paper has a total of 65 questions, out of which 30 questions are of one mark and 35 questions are of two marks. The two-mark questions further include two pairs of common data questions and two pairs of linked answer questions.
To secure a high a percentile one should remember that a candidate is being judged relatively and not absolutely. The overall rank achieved depends upon the preparation level of your competitors.
Scoring tips
The following tips would certainly help you in scoring well in the exam:
Go through previous years’ question papers along with solutions, and analyse the subject pattern and focus on those subjects which have maximum weightage.
Books can further be divided into two categories: Books that deal with the fundamentals and focus on conceptual clarity. Here textbooks by reputed publishers are a must. Books that provide a great deal of difficult and time-consuming questions and are used essentially as practice material.
Do not rely on just one book for a topic; instead consult a couple of books for the same topic. Prepare notes after completing each chapter.
Practise the maximum number of questions possible on a given topic. This certainly strengthens your preparation.
Keep in mind that those topics which are not in GATE syllabus could be certainly left out.
Make a list of topics in which you think you are ‘weak’ and focus on them. Have all essential formulae on your fingertips. Try to see if there are shortcut methods for a particular problem.
Joining a coaching institute is beneficial as you would be exposed to a regular systematic study. Also, joining a peer group would make one more competitive. Online coaching classes/test series are beneficial too.
Theory preparation should be completed one month before the exam and then practise many number of times.
Keep oneself updated about any changes or developments in the GATE examination for the coming year.
How to tackle the paper
Start the paper with one-mark question (25 in number). Since these are easy to attempt, they will help in building confidence. Proceed then to two-marks questions from Common Data and Linked Answer Questions.
Attempt this part with caution. These add up to eight more questions in addition to the 25 attempted above. Then go to General Aptitude section of 10 questions. All these will add upto 43 questions attempted. All these should be done in a timeframe of 100-110 minutes.
Now we are left with 22 questions in the technical portion and we can allot 50 minutes to this comfortably. At the end, you must have 15-20 minutes for a quick revision of the answer sheet to ensure all is in order.
While attempting the paper, leave questions which you are not sure of. The most deciding factor is negative marking. Avoid making any guesses and try to eliminate choices by analysis and calculations.

Anush Venkataraman
Age: 22
Intitution: Master’s in computer science, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi
Freelance profession: Web and graphic designing
Earning: Rs. 1,500-3,000 per assignment
Anush Venkataraman, 22-year-old student of Bharathidasan University, started freelancing in 2010 when a friend of his paid for a design he made. “I realised then that I could freelance and put my skills to best use!” Anush set up a small firm called Thez Infocorp through which he undertook assignments. “I make about Rs. 1,500-3,000 per assignment and there is no tension of balancing my studies and freelance work as I mostly work late night.”
Although he is a graduate of engineering in computer science, Anush chose to pursue web and graphic designing over a regular white-collar job. “Designing is fun and it is great to eke a living out of what we like rather than forcing ourselves to like what we do.”
Vishnu Varatharajan
Age: 20
Institution: Bachelor’s in engineering, SSN College of Engineering, Chennai
Freelance profession: Writing
Earning: Rs. 1,000 per assignment
This third-year engineering student from SSN College freelances in a field totally different from his stream of education. “I am a freelance writer and have been contributing to a leading Tamil Magazine.” Quiz him about the contrast in interests, he says, “Writing has always been my passion and so I chose freelancing. I struggled to balance the two initially, later things fell in place.” Vishnu is an IAS aspirant.
Shama Kumari Gulecha
Age: 19
Institution: Bachelor’s in journalism, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai
Freelance profession: Event management
Earning: Rs. 1,00,00 – 2,00,000 per assignment
Shama is a young entrepreneur who has established her own event management company called E3 events in partnership with a friend. “I used to coordinate corporate, marketing, promotional and management events for various companies like Dell, Samsung, Cartoon Network and Pogo. As I gained more contacts, orders for such events poured in. So, my friend and I decided to float a company,” says the young entrepreneur. “After graduation, this will definitely be my focus,” she says.
Moogambigai R.
Age: 24
Institution: Master’s in anthropology, Guru Nanak College, Chennai
Freelance profession: Photography
Earning: Rs. 500 – 1,000 per assignment
During her undergraduate days when Moogambigai pursued electronic media, she took to photography and started freelancing for the website mysixer.com. “After freelancing for mysixer.com for more than a year, I got the opportunity to be a freelance photographer with a leading Tamil magazine. As my college extended its support, I was easily able to manage studies and freelancing.” Photography is my second love, film-making is the first, says Moogambigai.
Priyal Singhvi
Age: 19
Freelance profession: Stall management and promotion
Institution: Bachelor’s in journalism, MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai
Earning: Rs. 1,500-2,000 per assignment
Priyal works as a stall management assistant for fairs at Chennai Trade Centre. “My work pattern is not taxing as most fairs happen during weekends. Also, there is lot of flexibility in my job that leaves me ample time for studies and other work.” She hopes to branch out into event management for her postgraduation.
Aakash Maddi, Anzal Ansari, Saptarshi Prakash
Age: 21, 22 and 23
Institution: Master’s in engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai
Freelance profession: Web and graphic designing
Earning: Rs. 1,500-10,000 per assignment
The trio from IIT Madras do web and graphic designing. Maddi says, “If you are good at something, never do it for free. Unlike other jobs, designing cannot be completed in a fixed time. Ideation might take 2-3 days. Once I get a hang of what is required, the actual working part is sometimes done within 3-4 hours.” “Designing is fun. I might probably pursue a degree in it in future,” says Prakash.
Vishranth Suresh, Haricharan Padmanabhan
Age: 20 and 21
Institution: Masters in engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai
Freelance profession: Tuition classes
Earning: Rs. 5,000 – Rs. 6,000 per month
Anyone who imparts knowledge is a teacher. Vishranth and Haricharan have been doing just that.
These engineering students of IITM have been tutoring IIT- JEE aspirants. The duo teaches kids belonging to classes 6-8 in mathematics and physics, respectively. “Tuition classes are just a part-time option and definitely not on the cards for a full-time profession,” says Haricharan.
