1 Introspect

3 Set A Deadline

Deciding by when you want to be employed is crucial. “A time line of roughly 100 days should suffice in most cases. Use the first 20 days for research and sending out applications. Allow companies to get back in the remaining time,“ said Nathan.

4 Use Resources

HRD Ministry Maps Colleges and Varsities

The initiative has covered not just government or aided colleges or universities but also private and unaided. 'Deemed' universities also have been covered under the mapping programme. 

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has posted a major achievement as it has finished mapping all the varsities and colleges across the country, technical and otherwise, on tangible parameters as part of its "Know Your College" campaign. Now students as well as parents will have such details of the colleges - their past performance and infrastructure - to make an informed choice before seeking admission.

The initiative has covered not just government or aided colleges or universities but also private and unaided. 'Deemed' universities also have been covered under the mapping programme. Also, the details of these colleges and universities -now available online on the MHRD website www.knowyourcollege-gov.in - would include information as the courses and programmes offered, faculty, labs, library, infrastructure and availability of hostels. Students and parents can just key in information such as state, district, university, level and course to find the relevant details. "With the time for admission to colleges having arrived, there is often confusion in the minds of students regarding which colleges to join and the courses to take up. This is an important initiative as students and parents often complain of having chosen the wrong combination of college or other institute of higher education and courses offered therein. Particular colleges and universities have their fields of specialisation which varies across the board. 

This initiative will help the students to seek admission in an informed manner," said an official of the ministry. "It will also help them in measuring the actual performance of their colleges against what the colleges might have advertised at the time of admission. This way it is also going to create a system of accountability where the onus of furnishing true information as well as living up to what has been advertised will be on the colleges and universities," the official added. Also, the portal would serve as the window for students to register their dissatisfaction or lodge their complaints against their institute which would be another factor for increased accountability for the institutions of higher learning. The portal was launched in November last year to help students in making the right selection of colleges and universities. The portal covers nearly 10,500 colleges that carry out about 14,000 programmes in the field of technical education. It also covers nearly 35,000 colleges teaching at least 20,000 programmes in non-technical education.

This portal is being maintained and managed by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Earlier, the MHRD had made headlines for providing all NCERT books on a mobile application. The books can be downloaded for free in any part of the country even over a smartphone. The Android operating system-based mobile app has been developed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). All books from Class 1 to 12, in Hindi or English, could be downloaded free of any charge. As part of an ICT-based project for extension and qualitative improvement of learning material by the ministry, the mobile app contains such selection options such as language, class, subject and chapters for narrowing down the search.

‘டிஜிட்டல் இந்தியா’ தரும் வேலையும் கல்வியும்

முன்பெல்லாம் மின்சாரக் கட்டணம் உள்பட அரசு அலுவலகங்களுக்குச் செலுத்த வேண்டிய கட்டணங்களைக் கட்டுவதற்கு நமது நேரமும் உழைப்பும் வீணாகும். நீண்ட வரிசைகளில் காத்துக் கிடப்போம். தற்போது உட்கார்ந்த இடத்திலிருந்தே ஆன்லைனில் பணத்தை ஒரு கிளிக்கில் அனுப்பிவிட்டு வேறு வேலையைப் பார்க்கிறார்கள். அரசின் செயல்பாடுகள் நவீனமாவது மக்களுக்கு நல்லதுதானே!

நவீனமான அரசு நிர்வாகத்தை இப்போது ‘இ-கவர்னன்ஸ்’ என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள். இந்த நவீனமும் காலாவதியாகிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அடுத்த தலைமுறை அதிநவீனத்தை எம்- கவர்னன்ஸ் (மொபைல் கவர்னன்ஸ்) என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள்.

இன்றைய உலகில் பல நாடுகள் இந்த அதிநவீன நிர்வாக முறைக்கு மாறிவருகின்றன. அந்த வரிசையில் இந்தியாவும் முன்னேறுவதற்காக ‘டிஜிட்டல் இந்தியா’ திட்டம் அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இணைக்கும் இணையம்

உலகளவில் அரசுகளின் செயல்பாடுகளில் இணையத்தின் பங்கு மேலும் மேலும் அதிகரித்துவருகிறது. உலகளவில் இணையத்தில் இணைக்கப்பட்ட சாதனங்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 2011-ம் ஆண்டிலேயே சுமார் 1,250 கோடியைத் தாண்டிவிட்டது. உலகில் உள்ள மனிதர்களின் ஒட்டுமொத்த எண்ணிக்கையை விட இது அதிகம். இது இன்னும் ஐந்து வருடத்துக்குள் இரு மடங்கு முதல் நான்கு மடங்கு வரை மேலும் அதிகரிக்கும் என்றும் தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. அனைத்தையும் இணைத்துப் பிணைத்து இணையம் தொடர்ந்து மேலும் மேலும் விரிந்து வருகிறது.

மத்திய அரசு அறிவித்துள்ள ‘டிஜிட்டல் இந்தியா’ திட்டத்தில் இணையத்தால் இணைக்கப்பட்ட பொருள்கள்தான் முதுகெலும்பாக இருக்கின்றன. எத்தனையோ அரசுத் திட்டங்களில் இதுவும் ஒன்று என்று சொல்லக்கூடியதல்ல இந்தத் திட்டம். இது அரசின் பல துறைகளில் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய ஒரு பெருந்திட்டம். இந்தத் திட்டம் சரியாக அமலாக்கப்பட்டால் அரசின் செயல்பாடுகளில் ஒரு தலைகீழ் மாற்றத்தை மக்களால் உணர முடியும்.

இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் கீழ் அடிப்படையான சில மாற்றங்களை முக்கியமான துறைகளில் ஏற்படுத்த மத்திய அரசு முடிவு செய்துள்ளது.

எங்கும் எதிலும் ஸ்மார்ட்

மக்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கக்கூடிய தண்ணீரை விநியோகிப்பது உள்ளிட்ட அரசின் நிர்வாகச் செயல்பாடுகள் ‘ஸ்மார்ட் தண்ணீர்’ என்ற பெயரில் மாற்றமடைய உள்ளன. தெருக் குழாய்களில் வரும் தண்ணீரின் தரத்தைக் கண்காணிக்கிற கருவிகள் இனி இருக்கும். அவை புதிதாக உருவாகவுள்ளன. ஆறுகளிலும் குளங்களிலும் அணைகளிலும் உள்ள தண்ணீரைக் கண்காணிப்பதற்கும், தண்ணீர் தொடர்பான பேரழிவு நிகழ்வுகளிலிருந்து பாதுகாப்பதற்கும் கருவிகள் தயாரிக்கப்படும். அவை முழுவதும் தேசிய அளவில் ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்படவுள்ளன. இந்த மொத்த நடைமுறையும் அதிநவீனப்படுத்தப்படும்.

ஸ்மார்ட் சுற்றுச்சூழல், ஸ்மார்ட் நலவாழ்வு, ஸ்மார்ட் விவசாயம், ஸ்மார்ட் திடக்கழிவு மேலாண்மை என்ற பெயர்களிலும் அரசின் செயல்பாடுகள் அதிநவீனப்படுத்தப்பட்டு தேசிய அளவில் ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்படவுள்ளன என்கிறது இது பற்றிய அரசின் கொள்கை அறிக்கை.

ஸ்மார்ட் நகரங்கள்

இந்தியாவில் சுமார் ஆறு லட்சம் கிராமங்கள் உள்ளன. இரண்டரை லட்சம் கிராமங்களிலாவது ‘பிராட் பேண்ட்’ இணையத்துக்கான தொடர்பை ஏற்படுத்துவது என்பதும் இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் நோக்கங்களில் ஒன்று.

இத்தகைய பிரம்மாண்டமான பணிகளுக்கான உள்கட்டமைப்பு களுக்காக அரசு நிறுவனங்களும் தனியார் நிறுவனங்களும் சேர்ந்து இந்தத் திட்டத்தில் நான்கு லட்சத்து 50 ஆயிரம் கோடி ரூபாய்களை முதலீடு செய்ய உள்ளதாக அறிவித்துள்ளன.

இந்தியாவின் முக்கியமான பகுதிகளில் 100 ஸ்மார்ட் நகரங்களை அறிவித்து அவற்றில் மிக நவீனமான வசதிகளை உருவாக்குவது இதன் நோக்கம். தமிழகத்திலும் 12 ஸ்மார்ட் நகரங்கள் உருவாக்கப்படும் என மத்திய அரசு அறிவித்துள்ளது.

தொழிலும் வேலையும்

இந்தத் திட்டத்தின் மூலம் 18 லட்சம் வேலைவாய்ப்புகள் உருவாகும் என்கிறது மத்திய அரசு. அதி நவீன மின்னணுக் கருவிகளை இந்தியாவிலேயே உற்பத்திசெய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் அரசு முயல்கிறது. தற்போது இந்தியாவுக்குத் தேவையான மின்னணுப் பொருள்களில் 65 சதவீதம் வெளிநாடுகளிலிருந்துதான் இறக்குமதி செய்யப்படுகின்றன.

இத்தகைய உற்பத்தியைச் செய்ய முயல்பவர்களுக்கு ஆரம்பக் கட்டத்தில் சலுகைகளையும் அரசு அளிக்கும். உற்பத்திப் பொருள்களையும் அரசே கொள்முதல் செய்யவும் உள்ளது.

புதிய கல்வி வாய்ப்புகள்

தற்போதுள்ள பொறியியல் பாடத்திட்டத்தில் பி.டெக். எம்.டெக். அளவிலும், டாக்டர் பட்டம் உள்ளிட்ட, ஆராய்ச்சிப் படிப்புகளின் அளவிலும் ‘இணையத்தால் இணைக்கப்பட்ட பொருள்கள் பற்றிய பாடமும்’ இணைக்கப்படவுள்ளது.

இணையத்தால் இணைக்கப்பட்ட பொருள்கள் பற்றிய பாடம் தொடர்பான படிப்புகளில் 6 வாரங்கள், மற்றும் 2 வாரங்களில் படிக்கக்கூடிய சான்றிதழ் படிப்புகளும் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்படவுள்ளன. இந்தத் துறையில் ஆராய்ச்சி செய்து அவற்றைச் சமர்ப்பிப்பவர்களுக்குக் கல்வி உதவித்தொகைகள் வழங்கப்படவுள்ளன.

இத்தகைய நடவடிக்கைகள் மூலம் தகவல்தொழில் நுட்பத் திறன் படைத்தவர்களாக ஒரு கோடி மாணவர்களை உருவாக்குவதற்கு அரசு முயல்கிறது என்கிறது மத்திய அரசின் எலெக்ட்ரானிக்ஸ் மற்றும் தகவல்தொழில்நுட்பத்துறை.

‘டிஜிட்டல் இந்தியா’ திட்டத்தைத் திறன்மிக்க முறையில் செயல்படுத்தி மேம்படுத்துவதற்கு இத்தகைய மாணவர்களிலிருந்து உருவாகும் ஊழியர்களே அடித்தளமாக இருப்பார்கள்.

கல்வியும் தொழிலும்

தொழில் நிறுவனங்களுக்கும் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களுக்கும் இடையே இது தொடர்பான மாநாடுகளும் பயிலரங்குகளும் நடத்தப்படவுள்ளன. ஐ.ஐ.டி. நிறுவனங்களில் எம்.டெக் அளவிலான இரண்டு வருடக் கால ஆய்வுகளுக்கு உதவித்தொகைகள் வருடந்தோறும் 150 பேருக்கு வழங்கப்படும்.

தொழில் நிறுவனங்களும் கல்வி நிறுவனங்களும் இணைந்து செயலாற்றக்கூடிய புதிய ஆய்வகங்கள் அமைக்கப்படவுள்ளன. கல்வியாளர்களின் அறிவைத் தொழில் நிறுவனங்கள் பெறுவதற்கும் தொழில் நிறுவனங்களில் ஏற்படும் புதிய மாற்றங்களின் அனுபவங்களைக் கல்வியாளர்கள் பெறுவதுமாக இருதரப்பும் பயன்பெறும் வகையில் திட்டமிட்ட செயல்பாடுகள் ஏற்படுத்தப்படவிருக்கின்றன.

University of Auckland: Health Research Doctoral scholarship

University of Auckland has invited applications for Health Research Doctoral scholarships for the 2015 session. The interested candidates must apply on or before November 1.

Scholarship details

Total no. of scholarships- 3

The students will be provided a tax-free stipend up to $25000 per annum. 

The students will be given a health insurance for 36 months, if applicable.

The part-time programme students will be paid pro-rata up to 72 months.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded to domestic students and domestic-fee paying students. 

The students who will be enrolled full-time will be awarded a scholarship. 

The students must have an appropriate research programme.

Selection Procedure

The selection of students for the scholarship will be based on their academic merit and the quality of research proposal. The scholarship will be awarded on the recommendation of a sub-committee of the Board of Graduate studies, comprising the Dean of graduate studies, the DVC, two faculties from Medical  and Health Sciences and one faculty each from     Arts and Science.

How to apply

 The interested student must apply online for their scholarship. The application should be sent for the scholarship office.

The applicants must send their applications with a written statement.  The statement should have relevant information which is their achievements, interests, work experience, future study prospective etc. 

Important dates

The last date to apply for the scholarship is November 1.

'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao': Foodpanda's scholarship keeps reservations for females

The website www.foodpanda.in, an online food ordering platform, has started a 100 per cent scholarship scheme to promote educational courses. They are aiming at providing scholarships to atleast some 100 students.

The website has started these scholarships with an objective to help students pursue courses onwww.twenty19.com. Twnety19.com is also an online platform which enables students to gain knowledge and skills through experience.

According to IANS report, foodpanda.in has so far received applications from over 200 cities and 1,000 colleges. 

Co-founder and managing director at foodpanda.in, Rohit Chadda in a press release said, "we believe it's important for each and every one to contribute towards a brighter future for our country and its children, and this is just another small step in that direction after our 'food for soul' initiative that we started last year."

He said that 40 per cent reservation has been kept for the female students. This has been done as a part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' campaign.

Foodpanda India is part a of the Rocket Internet group and is partner with the coupon site Cuponation.

The scholarship pays 5,450 dollars as the tuition cost for the Yale Publishing course. The winner of the scholarship, however, must pay their own travel and housing costs. Applications for the 2015 course, which starts in July, are currently being accepted. The magazine class will start from July 12 and the book publishing class will start off from July 19.

Yale University comprises three major academic components namely the Yale College undergraduate program, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the professional schools. In addition, Yale also provides a wide array of centres for programmes and also includes libraries, museums, and administrative support offices. With approximately 11,250 students attending Yale; it is one of the most emerging educational centres of the world.

I was then a freshly-minted civil services probationer, years before I studied theories of leadership and organisational behaviourat a top business school. But in those very early years, I discovered wonderful human resource insights that are simple but powerful lessons in leadership. They shaped a lot of me in my journey through a variety of industries and operating contexts. Maybe these five lessons - key elements in anyone's leadership evolution - will help us to at least pause and reflect. 

Stay close to your team, not your high office

All of 23, I remember going on my brand new red cycle to a subordinate office every morning. A round of hellos and personal enquiries with my staff, many of them decades older, brought firm handshakes and smiles. They were not used to a senior officer coming to them, clearing files at their tables, with them. My bosses were amused and perplexed. I knew my team better, understood what was happening in their lives and learnt from their wisdom. It was quicker, more inclusive, and built my early reputation as a leader of men and women. They delivered for me in full, even when I rarely had a typical reward carrot of the corporate kind with me. 

Look to compliment at least one person every day

This was something my boss noticed in me and pointed out. I was thrilled no doubt but also became conscious in what I now call, 'positive psychology'. I see so many leaders yell at and rebuke their teams. And I know that raising voices is not needed. What a few kind words can do, no fear can secure. You always will have many things that will go wrong. We must correct them. But let us look for that one thing that went well and not assume praise will build complacency.

You are there to take a decision. Take it

I hated seeing files in my 'in' tray and would ensure all were settled before I left for the day. One day someone asked me why I always make my decision or recommendation so quickly. My belief was nothing is dramatically going to change by the next morning. And a bad decision can always be reversed. But what do you do with a stuck decision? I also realised that you must delegate well, trust the right people and not micro-manage. Otherwise, there will be no time to do what you are supposed to focus on.

Be high on candour and honesty

As a young officer, I did see a lot of my senior officers not disagreeing with their bosses. I, however, also saw they were not necessarily respected by the larger team for that. They were holding back more for political expediency than a better administrative decision. One could be polite but not feel shy of airing a point of view.

I did have a few difficult experiences too but overall learnt that an honest speak-up is a better career builder than being a pure survivor. I have had senior bosses call me weeks later to say they valued my input, even if then they found it contrarian then. The same has largely played out true in the many years since.

Build your people

I had no formal input on HR then. But intuitively I knew one must give credit to whoever has done the work. I recall taking some outstanding staff to give them visibility to senior officers. Some may have even found me not confident. But to me it was building greater significance and exposure for people who otherwise would have thought they were mere file pushers. 

A lot of good work is done by people down the hierarchy. If only we could build them better, we could all have high-performing organisations. Life has moved on. Contexts have changed. The challenges of leadership have multiplied. Every leader is under greater pressure. But my early lessons have remained relevant. As one of my civil service bosses had told me years back, "Remember you finally have to earn your right to be a leader of men (and women) beyond your success at the UPSC (public service) examinations".

இன்று பல முன்னணி நிறுவனங்கள் லிங்க்டின், பேஸ்புக், டிவிட்டர், வியாடியோ, இன்ஸ்டாகிராம், பிஇண்ட்ரெஸ்ட், ஜிங், கூகுள் பிளஸ், பிரான்ச் அவுட் போன்ற சமூக ஊடக வலைதளங்களின் மூலம் தங்கள் நிறுவனத்துக்கான பணியாளர்களைத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கிறார்கள்.

சமீபத்தில் ஜாப்வைட் (jobvite) எனும் அமைப்பு வேலை தேடுபவர்களைப் பற்றி ஒரு கணக்கெடுப்பு நடத்தியது. அதன்படி இன்று வேலை தேடுபவர்களில் 86 சதவீதத்தினர் பேஸ்புக், லிங்க்டின், கூகுள் பிளஸ், டிவிட்டர், இன்ஸ்டாகிராம், பி இன்ட்ரெஸ்ட் ஆகிய ஆறு இணையதள சமூக வலைத்தளங்களில் தங்களை பதிவு செய்து கொண்டுள்ளனர். அவ்வாறு வேலை தேடியவர்களில் 76 சதவீதம் பேருக்கு பேஸ்புக் மூலமாக வேலை கிடைத்துள்ளது.

Book Challenges that improve reading habits

While the internet is flooded with fitness, cookery and fashion challenges, the book challenges that are being hosted by the various literary sites have proved to be the toughest deal so far. Moreover, some of these challenges have received really good feedback from their takers and have helped them improve their reading habits. So, if you are a bookworm who prefers poring over tomes to partying the night away, here are a few interesting book challenges that you will love...

52 books in 52 weeks

The challenge is to finish one book every week, so that by the end of the year, you would have read 52 books in total. This is an exciting challenge for readers who want to improve their speed of reading. The key is to stick to your favourite genre. If non-fiction and autobiographies do not interest you, don't try to explore new genres because your aim is to finish one book every week of the year.

The Victorian era challenge

The task at hand is to finish reading the work of the major authors of the Victorian era — between 1807 and 1901. The major writers of this era are Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, the Bronte Sisters, Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, Robert Browning, George Eliot, Lewis Carroll and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Pick up the works of one author at a time and finish it within a stipulated period of time. For instance, give yourself a fortnight's time to finish The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Doyle and follow it up with other works of the same author.

The five-book challenge

This challenge, started by the Duke's Library in United Kingdom, demanded the taker to finish five books from five different genres in one month and then write a 100-word review for each of them in an hour. What makes this challenge unique is that the idea is to go to a library to read the selected books. So, you have to give up your cosy blanket and mug of hot chocolate while reading, and embrace the silence of a public library instead.

The social media challenge

Challenge your friends on social media to read ten of your favourite books and give them a time period and ask them to carry forward the challenge once they are done. On successful accomplishment of the mission, you can reward your friends with small and cool surprises.

The A-Z Challenge

The rules of this challenge are simple. You have to finish one book with a name that begins with A in the first week. In the second week, you have to read a book with a name that begins with the letter B. So, in 26 weeks, you are supposed to finish 26 books.

Theme challenges

Pick up a theme, for instance, a book that is about a journey (Motorcycle Diaries) or coming of age (The Sense of Ending) as its theme. You can also select one predominant place, thing or activity and read a book on it. For example, you can pick up a country like Japan and read books that have been set there.

The book club challenge

Form a book club on your social networking page or in your phone's chat group. Invite friends to join and put up monthly challenges. The exciting thing here, you can fix a prize and reward the winner who wins the challenge.

12 books in 12 months

This is an easy challenge to take. Unlike the 52 books in 52 weeks challenge, here, you have enough time to experiment with different genres. This challenge is for someone who has been trying to read different genres. Make this year the year of trial and error. You can try 12 interesting books based on these classification:

- A book published in the year you were born.

- A book that has the initials of your name in the title.

- A book with a colour in the title

- A book with a name in the title

- A book with a number on the title

- A book with your favourite colour on its cover

- A book with non-human characters

- A Booker-winning book
